Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a world where, if you didn’t want to catch the flu, all you had to do was decree that there was no such thing as the flu? A world where all the things that make you happy get to stay, but all the things that make you frown get banished? Where you can eat all the cake and ice cream you want without ever ever never getting fat? Chew all the candy you want and never get a cavity, even if you never ever brush your teeth (because brushing your teeth makes you frown)?
Most adults who didn’t achieve adulthood just by getting older recognize this sugar-coated fantasy as, well, just that. It’s a world for toddlers. That’s why toddlers need parents (adults) to steer them away from making crazy decisions based on fantasies and what they want the world to be, rather than what it is. But what happens when the toddlers are the ones making the decisions?
The world burns.
From the New York Times:
In May, Mr. Trump proposed to stop collecting key measurements of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere as part of his 2026 budget plan. And since January, he has called for eliminating or overhauling the Federal Emergency Management Agency to shift disaster response to the states.
That’s because Trump doesn’t like emergencies and environmental disasters. They make him frown because they are complicated things with multiple syllables that require actual leadership and governing ability, plus they take time away from golf. Better to just ignore the problem altogether.
Poof. All better.
Here are just a few other things Trump has been doing to ignore the effects of climate change and the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment (because doing those things makes him frown). From The Climate Action Campaign, which tracks Trump’s harmful impact on the environment:
On July 29, Trump’s Department of Energy released a report denying climate science. The report was largely substantiated by ‘research’ conducted by well-known climate change-denying scientists. The Trump Energy Department is now led by this guy named Chris Wright, who says the goal of the Trump administration is to “end the cancel culture” in climate science. In other words, the Trump Energy Department believes it is high time we stopped canceling all those lies and let those lies run free, merrily masquerading as the truth.
Trump issued an executive order on July 7, 2025, titled "Ending Market Distorting Subsidies for Unreliable, Foreign-Controlled Energy Sources". Part of that order actually reads as follows: “Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order to eliminate subsidies for unreliable ‘green’ energy sources like wind and solar in furtherance of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. …President Trump is committed to unleashing American energy and preventing American taxpayers from funding expensive and unreliable energy policies from the Green New Scam.”
Since it looked like this summer might be a hot one, much hotter than usual, Trump decided to do his version of being proactive and eliminate anyone who might want to do something about it. Like the heat experts. From a June 3 article in Politico:
The Trump administration’s purge of federal personnel poses the latest threat to a rule meant to protect workers from extreme heat.
As part of an agency reorganization, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fired the research team tasked with studying the deadly effects of high temperatures and how to safeguard against them, writes Ariel Wittenberg.
The layoffs take effect this week, just before the start of a summer that is forecast to be hotter than normal across the United States.
The nation has suffered a string of record-breaking temperatures in recent years as climate change driven by burning fossil fuels supercharges heat waves. Extreme heat kills more U.S. residents each year than hurricanes, floods and tornadoes combined, federal data shows.”
Federal data? I’m sorry, but what is that? I feel a big bad frown coming on…
