Issue #925 The Choice, Thursday, September 11, 2025

For Trump and his Republicans, the murder of rightwing media darling Charlie Kirk appears to be their (next) best chance so far to (once again) distract the public’s attention away from the relentless persistence of the Epstein files as a media headline. Although, as of this writing, the shooter has yet to be identified, the MAGA machine is already breathlessly blaming the Democrats for somehow being responsible for Kirk’s death.
“In a video posted to social media, Trump said, "It's long past time for all Americans and the media to confront the fact that violence and murder are the tragic consequence of demonizing those with whom you disagree."
"For years, those on the radical Left have compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis and the world's worst mass murderers and criminals," he added. "This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism that we're seeing in our country today, and it must stop right now."
So it’s simply too easy to dispute this twisted sentiment, starting with Trump’s response to – and involvement in – the riots of Jan. 6, 2021, which resulted in the murder and injury of a number of police officers as well as rioters. And then in June of this year, Vance Boelter allegedly shot Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, resulting in their deaths, and shot Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, who survived the attacks.
When Trump finally listened to his handlers and calmly urged his rioters to go home in January of 2021, he couldn’t do so without telling them how much he loved them and that they were all very special people. As for the attacks on the Hortman and Hoffman families, Trump’s response was crickets. But now, when Kirk, a rightwing hate-mongering commentator, gets killed, Trump demands that American flags be flown at half staff across the nation, at military bases and embassies. This is a blatantly desperate attempt to rally his base and hopefully help them forget about the Epstein files.
There are numerous other examples of when Trump made clear how much he doesn’t care about the sanctity of human life unless he gets something out of it. And that right there is the point; for Trump, the killing of Charlie Kirk is the best thing that could have happened right now because it serves his purposes of diverting attention away from the circus of the Epstein files by any means necessary.
To Trump and MAGA, the killing of Charlie Kirk wasn’t a tragedy; it was an opportunity.
