Trump says, “Let them starve!”
Maybe Trump thinks that only poverty-stricken dark-skinned Democrats in deep blue states will be forced to starve once SNAP benefits are shut off on November 1st. Because, sick as that sounds, that would make sense in the twisted world we are living through right now. Starve the evil (dark-skinned, immigrant, America-hating) Democrats, feed my beautiful (white) people.
That sort of thing. Because, you know, once the Democrats go hungry, then that will force them to support the Trump funding bill and to bow down like slaves, and then the government shutdown will magically come to an end, and everyone will know it was Trump who saved the world annnnnnd…
Maybe not.
So here’s the latest from CBS News as of 12:23 am on Wednesday, October 29:
“The Senate failed to advance a Republican-backed funding bill to end the government shutdown for the 13th time. The final vote was 54 to 45, falling short of the 60 votes needed to move forward. No new Democrats voted in favor of advancing.”
This is the 13th time the funding bill has failed in the Senate, and the government shutdown is now nearly a month old. Although the pressure is certainly mounting rapidly, it appears that most Democrats are still holding firm and refusing to yield to the insanity of this bill. It also doesn’t appear that many are fooled into believing it is the Democrats who are at fault here, since it is Trump who is refusing to allow this mandatory program to be funded after November 1st because he is not getting his way. That’s for now.
As for which Americans are facing the biggest crisis with the possible termination of SNAP benefits, it’s clear (though apparently not to Trump) that a rather broad swath of his biggest supporters will be hit the hardest. According to NPR, approximately 749,000 people in Alabama participate in SNAP. In Arkansas, the number is an estimated 236,000. In Arizona, the number is 887,000. In Georgia? 1.3 million. In Florida? It’s 3 million.
All red states that went for Trump in 2024. Obviously, not every single recipient of SNAP in a red state can be automatically assigned to the Trump supporter column. But I would wager it’s a pretty good guess that these aren’t all poor Black Democrats. Not by a long shot.
